Teaching Children about Fire Safety

 A fire can start at anytime and anywhere and it is important to be prepared for it before it does happen, such as knowing what to do to keep safe.  A child will know how to respond to a fire and how to act quickly when a child is prepared for it. The only way a child can be prepared for a fire is when parents or other adults such as teachers or fire fighters teach them the important facts about fire safety.  This topic is important because knowing what to do can save children’s lives. 
Below is a lessons plans that can be done both at home or at school to teach children about fire safety:

Fire Safety

Name of lesson:  BE S-A-F-E
Goal of lesson:  Children will understand that it is important to keep the house away from anything that causes fire.
 Objectives:
 By the end of the lesson, children will be able to:
·         State ways of keeping the house safe. 
·         State why we need to keep the house safe.
·         State what items in the house can cause a fire to start.
Materials to be used: Poster board and markers.
Age/Grade of students: 5- 6 year olds
Content area: Science

Seating configuration: Children will be sitting at the carpet for the discussion and will go back to their seats to draw on the poster board.
Brief description of lesson: The class will make a poster board together by writing rules about keeping the house fire- free.
Motivational Activity: The teacher will sing the children a safety song called Be S-A-F-E and the children are welcome to sing along or get up and dance.
Procedure: (step by step
1.The teacher will call the children to the carpet by table at a time
2.The teacher will tell the class that they will be learning about fire safety.
3.The teacher will start off by singing the song called Be S-A-F-E.
4.The teacher will ask the children if they have or known anyone who has experienced a fire in the house.
5The teacher will say to the children that “a fire in the house can cause children and adults to lose valuable things in the house.  It can cause people to lose their house.  Some people can also die in a fire. It is very important to make your home a safer place.”
6.The teacher will say: “I am going to sing you a safety song again. Pay good attention to all the safety rules you hear in the song.
7.The teacher sings the song again.
8.The teacher will ask the children to recall the safety rules.
9.The teacher will write the rules on a poster board as the children recall them from the song.
10.After they finish recalling the rules, the teacher will give each child a chance to decorate or draw something on their rules.
11. He teacher will dismiss students by table for the drawing activity.
12.The teacher will pass the poster board from table to table to give each child the opportunity to draw on it.
13. The teacher will hang up the rules when it is done and provide the children with the lyrics of the song and a checklist of rules to follow. 

 Summary/Closure: The teacher will remind the students to remind parents to follow these safety rules in the house.
 Method of assessing the students understanding of lesson/concept:
The way of assessing the students is by the discussion and completion of the safety rule poster.
